Dendritic agates are formed when manganese or iron oxides are deposited in microcrystalline quartz. Water carries these oxides into crevices in the earth, and as the water evaporates it leaves behind the oxides, creating the agate's iconic botanical patterns. The formation process can take between 13 million and 3 billion years.
